Was Putin rich before he joined the KGB? Or did he dip into the public treasury to pay for that expensive watch? Maybe it was that oil tycoon's watch - that guy he put in prison after nationalizing his oil company.
A $100,000 watch is ridiculous. No watch should be worth that much.
Here's a pic for all you ex-soldiers...

Всегда пожалуйста, обращайся.
James, pretty sure he was not rich before KGB, but was sure rich long before becoming president - you know, Russian oil tycoons and statesmen of various ranks have a miraculous business skill to make billions in just a few years from nothing. The law of working hard and earning money just doesn't work there, sad but true :)

BTW, James, if you think a 100K watch is outrageous, Silvio Berlusconi (if you know who that is - Italy, that is, in Europe) wears a 540K Vacheron Constantin, but hey, it's alright, he is not from KGB, just simple Costa Nostra :)

$100K watch...nothing spectacular...anything over 10K is just jewelry...you don't sit there and say "no diamond should cost 100K" so why would you say that about a watch? A watch band made from platinum plus a bunch of diamonds (maybe black diamonds?) on the dial, and you can easily top 100K and more.
Also, other 'collector' value can be added, ie - John Lennon used to wear the watch, or Putin - for instance, watch one day Putin's watch appear on eBay for a few million $$ :)

Middle class check time on their cellphones and computer screens, so you are already moving up the ladder, starting with Tommy Bahama :):) Joke, OK, no obsessing over any subliminal messages hidden in this message and especially any psychoanalysis, please :)
Just curious why discussing watches provokes negative responses. Nobody would consider it snobbery if someone said "I prefer an Acura or a BMW over a Ford or Buick", right? Or Ruth's Chris over McDonalds - come on it's all food that all gets mixed up inside anyway? Or a house - hey you can live in a Motel 6 or some cockroach infested shithole, too, right?
It's all normal, but watches - no no, you are a snob and, how did this dumbass put it your "case was directly borrowed form Clinical Psychiatry 101". Jeez, people, take a chill pill or something :)
I like Audemars and Breguet (btw, watch of Russian nobility, even Pushkin mentioned it in one of the poems), but can't afford those :) So I'll get a Sinn, Hamilton or Omega (after all Omega Speedmaster was on the moon!).

И там гуляет на просторе,
Пока недремлющий брегет
Не прозвонит ему обед. "

It's not a watch thing.
If I recommend a BMW and you say that only losers drive BMW's cuz they aren't smart enough to buy a Ferrari - it gets you in the same situation. I think you have a quirky sense of humor. When I first read your post about Berlusconi I didn't get it. The 2nd time I read it - it was funny.
Anyway, check out my new friends below....lol
Putin can keep his watch - send more KGB agents!!!!!

Wow, you nailed it...LOL, I always check time on my computer screen and cell phone...
Truth is, $60K watches are, of course, out of my price range, but even if they were, I'd most likely rarely ever wear one. I hate any jewelry, be it watches or rings (my wife still struggles with this one)...
Even when I had that Breitling I mentioned earlier, I always took it off when I got home because it was heavy and basically that's why I don't like jewelry...it weighs me down...
Anyone else relate to this?

Hehe, dude it was a joke :) I check time on PC and my BlackBerry all the time :) And I am most certainly middle class (still hoping to win a lottery some day though) :) Forget this discussion, people take things just too seriously :) And James, sorry but you just can't compare Tommy Bahama to a BMW, so your analogy is a bit flawed. It's more like a Kia, or Hyundai, which are not bad cars, they just have, let's say, dull personalities :)

I wish 'somebody' would go check out this damn watch. It's not a hyundai.
I will not rest until somebody goes to Tommy bahama or tj max (can't confirm they are sold there) and holds it in their hand. It's no hyundai.
I hate you.

Why do you care so much what Alex or anyone else thinks of Tony Bahama? If you like it then who cares?
Maybe you can find a Tony Bahama user group in Atlanta...you know, owners of this watch get together and discuss how great these watches are, etc. I'm sure there's lots of owners of this watch, since it appears to be a popular brand...so don't worry, I'm sure there's millions of people who agree with you that these are cool watches...

Seen them, looked at them and gazillion of other U.S. "brand" watches - same crap, different angle :) The only respectable U.S. brand is Hamilton, but actually it is no longer a U.S. brand for a while now - bought out by Swatch group. Was founded in 1892 in Pennsylvania though, so good old American heritage.
Go to Phipps or Northpoint Mall - there are very nice watch shops there (I liked one in Northpoint), check out some real brands, talk to people, put them on your wrist :) Then we'll talk about your tommy bahama :)
