Looking for nice area to live near Atlanta

My name is Viktoria. Me and my American husband will be moving to the Georgia in a few months. Are there any nice smaller cities near Atlanta? We want to be close to Russian people, stores and restaurants. Can someone please help us with this request?

Russian people don't live together here in ATL, nice little towns near ATL are Alpharetta, Duluth, Suwanee, Marrietta.....

    - Независимость - это когда в 20-й раз наступаешь на одни и те же грабли, а русские уже ни при чем....

    Viktoria, welcome to the forum.

There is not single "Russian district" in Atlanta.  Even in areas where majority of the Russians live, it's unlikely that you will see or meet any of them on the street or have Russian neighbors.  That's why we have this website Smile

Most Russians who move to Atlanta find location convenient to work, good schools, and proximity to the Perimeter.  Any of the areas that KGBMen mentioned are good.  Avoid moving too far away from the city, if you can afford it.

Re: Looking for nice area to live near Atlanta

    Hello Viktoria!

I saw your post earlier today, and just wanted to respond to it while I had a chance to do so!  I'm actually also relocating to ATL area in as little as 3 days, actually!  I just wanted to share with my views on some of the areas I got to visit during my numorous trips there over last year or so.  I've only been driven around for the most part, but know people who live in Norcross, as well as, in Duluth area.  The people I know are russian, but as someone mentioned in the above reply to your post, in ATL area, all the russian people are spread out, much more so then from where I have lived for the past 18 years.

In any case, from the two above locations I really like Duluth!  It is in the Gwinett county, and Norcross is actually right next to it.  It is full of things to do, or at least in my opinion...has a bunch of cool stores and from what I understand conviniently located.  Anyhow, that's where I'm moving to and plan on staying.  It would be cool to have some russian neighbors and russian friendly american people too!  So, if you want you can contact me via private message through this forum for the details.

The place I'll be living is nice, I really like it.  For a big city that  ATL is, and how nurvous I was about it's size in comparisson to where I have lived for all these years...where everything is never farther than 25 minutes in any direction pretty much, I think it's pretty conviniently located.  From what I understand from the people I communicate with that live in ATL area and whome I have spoken to this was the idea that I came to.  When I'm Duluth, I don't even feel that it's part of a huge city, that is located very near by...  Maybe I'm going to be suprised in a negative way when I get there, but that was the idea that I got from my trips.

Also, the traffic is horrendous, and can keep you on the highway standing still pretty much for hours on a distance of a couple of miles you need to drive to finaly get where you are going.  So, from that prespective, you should definitely most of all consider where you will work, and how you'll need to get there and of course the safety record of any area that you'll be considering of settling in, but that you know your-self.  If you'll need to get to work by car, you definitely need to look for something near by work.  You'll find Russian people eventually at events and even this forum!  People from the forum that I met so far, are amazingly nice and willing to help out.

So, yes, please contact me, and I'll give you the deatails, and may be it will work out for us to be neighbors! :-)

    Good luck!

Re: Looking for nice area to live near Atlanta

    Viktoria,

I am certainly not a KGB person as the other contributors have been lovingly called Smile. I can't be, am not even Russian, I am Czech from Prague and moved to Atlanta 10 years ago. I know how hard it is. For 6 years I have been working as a realtor with Coldwell Banker and as such, I am often helping people relocating in here from elsewhere.

The rule of thumb is to know your budget and look for affordable area, which would be close to your place of work and close to good schools if you have children and it is important to you. Traffic in this city is really awful and it may make your life extremely miserable if you won't choose wisely. If you work from home, but travel often, your preferences may be to stay closer to the airport. If travel is not part of your life and you do not prefer city life in downtown, you may prefer easy accessibility to the outdoors, lake, mountains etc. A church may be important to you and that can determine the choice of your future home as well.

As you heard, there is no typical place known as "Russian community" here, but I am sure you would find plenty of nice people around different activities and events and in a few Russian/European Food stores. We have one close to my neighborhood in Alpharetta and it has always been a great resource of contacts and information (not to mention the great poppy seed pastry that is the main reason I go there ever so often...)

Anyway, try to set some preferences for you and your family and any good realtor can help you from there. I would certainly be happy to!

    Good Luck!

    Marcela from Prague
