I studied in a foreign university, and when I took the mid-term exams I flunked them all. I was sure I got at least a "B" on all my exams, so imagine my horror (yes, really, scared the sh*t out of me) when I realized I was flunking. You see, in the American school system, even in college, you are simply required to memorize the material. Not 'apply' the material. In the foreign exams if you miss ANYTHING you should know, you lose like 20 points (instead of 5 points), but even more different: students are asked to apply what they learned to a new situation and actually stretch your knowlege in a new way. that was horrific. I can't just spit back out what you taught??
