    Re: Nanny/Housekeeper required

Is that a normal rate of pay for a nanny/housekeeper?  If so, I should hire one to take care of my cats and clean my apartment.

That is a 50 hour work week.  Assuming a 30 day month with 22 work days, that is a maximum of $5 per hour, less than minimum wage with no benefits mentioned (and a possible requirement of using your own car?).

You could make more than that working at McDonalds.  Or, if you really wanted to clean house, you could make more as a housekeeper only and not have the responsibility of the infant care, not to mention the liability.  These days, they convict and jail innocent bystanders (who have no duty of care) when a child gets harmed... can't even imagine what they'd do to the nanny.

Leah you're not the only one that had the same thoughts. I don't think that any responsible person would even consider working for this little.

You have to be either an illegal immigrant or someone that just doesn't want to sit at home alone and not do anything. The normal rate for a nanny/housekeeper

is $500 per week - which would be $2,000 a month .... 100% more than what this person is offering.

Good Luck to myinterest - please let us know if anyone ends up responding to your ad.

    Re: Nanny/Housekeeper required

I have heard of similar (slightly higher) pay for similar responsibilities only for "live-in" nannies (so food and board were free).  This offer is silly.

    Re: Nanny/Housekeeper required

I had a lot of calls, because we were looking for the same lately. 10$/hour is minimum now. I could recommend some people, but this offer is ridiculous.....

    good luck anyways!

Agree with everyone who replied.  One should be afraid to leave a child with some to whom the author offered such miserable salary.

Live-in salary is 500-600 a week, without any house cleaning duties.  Child is the most precious "thing" one has- and to value his/her care like that?

    Re: Nanny/Housekeeper required

I would disagree here. I have heard of people paying $1100 for a live in nanny or for the one that comes in the morning and leaves in the evening. Of course a nanny does not abandon an infant to load the dishwasher. Things around the house are to be done when the child is napping. I don't think it is that unusual. Also, in most cases it is $1100 tax free, so a job at Mc Donalds would bring in much less, not to mention the fact that you are on your feet all day at Mc Donalds, whereas a nanny does get to sit down or stretch on a couch even for a little while, with the child or not. A nanny can also watch TV when the baby is sleeping (or not), snack or chat on the phone. It is not a job to be compared to fast food slaving conditions. Yes, there is no health insurance, but most people earning $5 an hour at McDonalds can't afford to pay the premiums, so they don't have the insurance that's *availabale* to them. And they do drive their own cars to the establishment, too.

How do you think all mothers manage to do the same things the nanny is being asked to do without jeopardizing their kids? Stay at home moms do take care of one or more children, cook, clean, do laundry, and load the dishwasher.

Never seen or heard of this.  At this imaginable rate it makes no sense for the mother to work. She'd be shelling more than half her income, provided the mother is in some professional position earning good money. At this rate it makes sense to be a stay at home mom.

natalya, just because you "have not heard or seen" something does not mean it does not exist (it is generally true for the most situations in life- just a side note-thought to ponder, so to speak).

With that out of the way, what makes sense or what does not depends on a person and his/income- 600.00 is "half of her income" as you said- when it is.  Have you ever thought of the possibility that people/women more money than that? And it does make sense for them to pay what they pay to ensure the nanny values her job, does not feel underpaid, and is not looking for bigger and better things.

What makes sense and what does not it rather an individual decision.

Using your own pearls of "wisdom" - just because you "have not heard or seen" something does not mean it does not exist. There are many Great nannies who are willing to work for even less than $1100/months (ask me how I know this). Not all folks (especially senior citizens) are driven by money - for some having good personal connection with the child and the parents is far more important than extra bucks they can get. So, there's nothing wrong with asking - I am sure the poster will be able to find the right person for the job.

    Re: Nanny/Housekeeper required

I have never stated the author or anyone else for that purpose will not able to find help for the advertised amount of money.  I voiced my opinion about the ad- but never said such nannies do not exist.

I also hope the poster will find the right person for the job.
