    Hard drive recovery question

My hard drive died on me. Some sectors are not accessible. The good news is it can be recognized by a controller as a physical drive. But not a logical drive.

Can you recommend a software to restore data from HDD in such condition?

    Re: Hard drive recovery question

I would recommend a different approach altogether.  You have to replace your drive no matter what (I hope you will Big Smile)

So set up a new one, install the OS, etc, then hook this one up as slave or secondary physical drive, you should be able to manually move files residing on healthy sectors.  You might still need recovery software, but maybe not, and you haven;t really done any extra work or spent any money yet (other than a new drive which you needed anyway).  I would not be surprised that anything any recovery software can recover, is exactly trhe same as what you can recover manually.

    Re: Hard drive recovery question

Egor, I already built new system. The key point is hard drive can not be identified as logical drive in the system. Only as physical (don't get me wrong on this term giving recent topics on this forum ;). When I try to "enable" it the OS gives me "Sector read error" message. I can only access it through a special software.

Я б использовал USB enclosure, но не суть.  Если он у тебя узнаётся, используй Chkdsk.ехе, он должен изолировать повреждённые секторы, ну а как закончит, так что можно подастаёшь.

I tried Chkdsk when I boot from Windows CD. The utility hangs during scan. Must be some hardware related damage.

How long did you let it hang? Chkdsk can take a few days. If it is HW related damage, placing the HD in a freezer for 24 hrs and then hooking it up and running chkdsk again works sometimes. Worked for me once.

    Re: Hard drive recovery question

I let chkdsk run for 10-20 mins and then rebooted PC. I guess if I put HDD in a box with selicagel (or salt) and then place it in a freezer it won't get much condensation inside. I should try it.

PS: If I won't appear on a forum after freezing my hard drive you know what mental institution you can find me ;)

Yes, there is a risk and it's a last resort. I did it on quite a few HD and it never made things worse.

condensation will form regardless after you take it out, unless you are able to create a vacuum somehow, and keep it in the vacuum until it warms up.  Either way, I would recover what you can way before doing some crap like this Big Smile

You run it with /F option first, right? Let it run overnight or so

    Re: Hard drive recovery question

If chkdsk cannot finish successfully you pretty much can forget about using any software for recovery

    Re: Hard drive recovery question

    Here, I agree :)

Call that place, Sergey, just talk to them.  Unless you burn it or put it in the freezer it should be fairly cheap.

Connect HDD to a cable, put it in a plastic bag with selicagel and cable going outside, connect vaccum cleaner to a bag for a sec and seal with scotch tape. You can also palce HDD into a condom and seal it with nipple clips Wink
