    KGBMan:

There will be no freaking condensation inside, c'mon people haven't you ever disassembled any hard drives ??

Freezing is perfectly safe, as long as external stuff is kept dry.

Unless there is vacuum inside the drive or other gas it has air inside. Air has moisture in it. When you cool down air moisture condenses as water drops at the dew point. Plus there is electronics outside that gets wet or covered by ice crystals.

    Muidugi:

If chkdsk marks bad sectors as bad you can use Undelete or something like it to recover the data. The main objective here is to get to the drive. I have SpinRite if you decide to give it a try.

I will keep that as an option. Thank you!

I've bought IDE enclosure. After 2 hours of freezing I was not able to see the drive. I will give it more time to be in the fridge and try again tomorrow morning.

    Sergey,

Save yourself some time, don't bother with Windows. Connect the frozen drive and boot with a recovery software.

Can SpinRite make a bootable drive? I can make Windows "lite" like BartPE but I have to preinstall somehow recovery software in it. I am not sure right now how.

At first, I thought you guys were joking about the freezer. What's the logic behind it?

Btw, I am writing a term paper about anti-forensics right now and I read about something that can bypass Windows altogether in recovering the data from a hard drive. It was just the other day but I've got so many of these papers and articles lying around that I can't find it anymore. It was a fairly easy and user-friendly tool too, I actually thought it'd be nice to have and then read on and forgot about it.

The logic behind HD in a freezer is to make the arm move past the spot on the plate of the HD where it might be touching it.

    Re: Hard drive recovery question

Thanks a lot, Muidugi!!! One more question: do I need to connect drive to it's original IDE controller (low level HDD commands etc?) or USB enclosure should be enough?

I don't think that CD has USB drivers. Also it's going to be harder to figure out which one is wich. I'd just connect it back the way it was.

Makes sense. I need to make a cryogenic setup since my HDD is frozen and I want to keep it running in sub zero temperature.

Or I might buy couple of bricks of dry ice and keep it cool to -78.5 °C (-109.3 °F). Yeah, that will be really cool! Big Smile
