Congrats on being the first into space!

    In other News....

Those SU-24 Bear bombers that Russia has been flying along our Alaskan air space are about 50 years old.....

I hope they don't fall out of the sky while trying to 'scare' us.

The latest Star Wars test shooting a ballistic missle out of the sky was a success.  Look for deployment of those anti-missle shields in Eastern European countries near you.

It is an amazing event, if we'll be realistic about it.  The beginning of a count-down of a space age.

No one's trying to scare you, Russians just care for their borders.  So if the bombers are that old, and have been in production for 50 years (which is not the same as being 50 years old), then why all the hysteria?

It's not up to you to decide, let's see what the Polish will say after the elections.

    Re: 50th Anniv. of Sputnik

When I see those big old propeller planes on TV, it almost takes me back to the good old days.....

Forget the B-2 'stealth' bomber, or even the B-3.  How much Russian GDP will Vladimir spend to compete with our new military spaceplanes:

Military Spaceplanes with aircraft-like operability and the next generation of Long Range Strike Aircraft (LRSA). Concepts developed for the Air Force's first responsive Military Spaceplane, entitled the Space Operations Vehicle (SOV), provide a highly flexible, reusable space launch vehicle capable of performing a broad range of military missions in and through space.

    Star Wars is here.

U.S. Study Supports Russia's AMD Suspicions

Still think it's a good idea?  JB, you national pride is misplaced in this case, your country is stating the new round of arms race, and this makes you happy?

And btw, the Bears are great planes for its purposes, very fuel efficient, can stay in the air many times longer than the jet equivalents, perfect for surveillance, and the version that's used today is Tu-95MS usually armed with cruise missiles.  And as the recent past shows, Russians are no longer looking to mimic the American designs, so why do you think they'll be developing something similar?

    Re: 50th Anniv. of Sputnik

The whole 'military showdown' thing with Russia is silly.  Like I've said in the past, that war is over....

Once Putin gets his new job as Prime Minister maybe things will settle down.  This is all about him throwing himself a nice little goodbye party with shirtless fishing trips, miltary parades and this international air show.  It's all just 'show' as far as I'm concerned.  oh, almost forgot about his claiming new Russian territories under the ice pack at the north pole.  Let's not forget that important discovery.   That new vacation spot will make Siberia look like Ibiza.

    lol

I only have one message for Putin:  send more women.

James, you judgment is irresponsible, at best.  Russia did not initiate this "showdown", but tries to provide a reasonable response.

Shirtless comment is beaten to death, only puritans like Americans will stress out about this on and on.

And, you know, finders - keepers, what will be found under that ice cap (how much longer do you think it will be there?) belongs to Russia, eh?

See, you give it a push and Russians go:

    15:49 | 05/ 10/ 2007

MOSCOW. (RIA Novosti political commentator Andrei Kislyakov) - On October 11, the Russian government will consider a state defense order for the next three years.

The program covering the period until 2015 is expected to replace 45% of the military inventory in the army and navy. In addition to re-equipping tank, motorized rifle and air landing units, it also plans to build up strategic weapons. The troops will take delivery of over 50 mobile Topol-M missile systems, while the fleet of strategic aviation will grow to 50 Tu-160 Blackjack and Tu-95 MS Bear missile carrier aircraft.
